Understanding Car Insurance
What is IDV (Insured Declared Value)?
IDV is the maximum sum assured fixed by the insurer that is provided on the theft or total loss of a vehicle. Essentially, it is the current market value of your car. Setting the right IDV is crucial—if it's too high, your premium increases unnecessarily; if it's too low, you risk receiving a lower claim amount in case of total loss.
What is Zero Depreciation Cover?
Also known as "Bumper to Bumper" or "Nil Depreciation" cover, this is an add-on to a comprehensive policy. In a standard policy, depreciation is applied to the replaced parts based on the car's age. With a Zero Dep cover, the insurer pays the entire cost of the replaced parts without factoring in depreciation, resulting in a much higher claim settlement.
How to Lower Your Car Insurance Premium?
- Maintain No Claim Bonus (NCB): Drive safely and avoid claiming for minor damages. NCB can give you up to a 50% discount on your Own Damage (OD) premium for 5 consecutive claim-free years.
- Install Anti-Theft Devices: Fitting your car with ARAI-approved anti-theft devices can fetch you an additional discount on the premium.
- Choose Voluntary Deductible: A voluntary deductible is the amount you agree to pay from your pocket at the time of a claim. Opting for a higher voluntary deductible lowers your premium.
- Compare Quotes: Always compare quotes from different insurers online before renewing or buying a new policy.
