Understanding Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
What is Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)?
Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is a financial estimate intended to help buyers determine the direct and indirect costs of a product. For cars, TCO goes beyond the initial purchase price to include expenses you will incur while operating and maintaining the vehicle, typically calculated over a 5-year period.
Why is Depreciation the biggest cost?
Depreciation is the loss in value of a car over time. Most new cars lose about 50% of their value in the first 5 years. While it's not a cash expense you pay out of pocket monthly, it represents the largest loss of wealth during car ownership. When you sell the car, the difference between what you paid and what you get back is the depreciation cost.
How do fuel and maintenance impact TCO?
A car with a low purchase price but poor fuel efficiency can end up costing more over 5 years than a slightly more expensive hybrid. Similarly, luxury cars often have affordable used prices but carry exorbitant annual maintenance and repair costs, dramatically increasing their true ownership cost.
