Indian Auto Industry Q2 FY2027 Sales: SUVs Reach 68% of Passenger Vehicle Market

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers has reported a strong second quarter for India's vehicle industry. Passenger-vehicle sales reached 1.36 million units in Q2 FY2027, covering July to September 2026, a 30.7% increase over the same quarter a year earlier.

The headline number is significant, but the mix is even more revealing: utility vehicles accounted for 68% of passenger-vehicle sales and grew 34.2% year on year. Passenger-car sales also recorded healthy double-digit growth of 24.9%. The data confirms that Indian buyers continue to move towards SUVs, crossovers and other high-riding body styles.

The numbers behind the quarter

Three-wheelers2.85 lakh23.6%

SIAM also reported 4,54,574 passenger vehicles sold in September 2026. The organisation notes that BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar Land Rover and Volvo Auto data was not available in the relevant total, while Tata Motors' inclusion is described separately in the release. That limitation matters when comparing the figure with manufacturer-level totals.

Why SUVs continue to win

The SUV share is being driven by more than fashion. Buyers are paying for higher seating positions, ground clearance, larger cabins and a perception of stronger road presence. Manufacturers have also made compact SUVs more accessible, putting features such as automatic gearboxes, sunroofs, connected-car systems, six airbags and ADAS into price bands that once belonged to hatchbacks and sedans.

The result is a competitive market where the best SUVs in India now span small urban models, mid-size family SUVs, three-row vehicles and electric crossovers. Buyers should still compare visibility, ride quality, boot space and actual city manoeuvrability rather than choosing purely from the body style.

What GST 2.0 and new launches changed

SIAM attributes the quarter's performance to improved affordability after GST 2.0, a lower comparison base, strong financing support, new launches, alternative fuels and EV adoption. Festive demand also helped the quarter. These factors make the October-to-March period important for manufacturers, but a strong quarter does not mean every model is selling equally well.

New products are creating fresh demand, especially in hybrids and EVs. Buyers benefit from more choice, but they also need to check introductory prices, waiting periods, insurance premiums, charging access and variant availability. A discount or tax change can alter the ownership equation more than a small difference in claimed mileage.

Outlook for buyers in late 2026

SIAM expects positive momentum in the second half of FY2026-27, supported by festive demand, new launches, fleet replacement and infrastructure activity. Growth rates may moderate against a higher base, and inflation or interest-rate changes could affect monthly EMIs.

For consumers, the practical takeaway is simple: competition is strong, but urgency is not always necessary. Compare the final on-road price, finance offer and waiting period across at least three alternatives. Our new-car directory, car comparison tool and EMI calculator are designed for that decision.
